Throat Culture

We get quite a few remixes of our sessions from folk all around the world keen to show us their skills and I have to say that while generally people make a pretty good job, most of the mixes we get back are fairly basic attempts at copying the finished article usually with louder drums and a bit brighter eq (What monitors do some people use!) However the real work in producing a song really goes on at the tracking stage and so this session is a bit of a challenge for all you would be producers out there by adding a bit of yourself into the mix.
The session

Last year when we got hold of the Golden Age R1 ribbons we were pretty blown way with them but we wanted to try them out in the studio particularly on vocals so we asked local duet Throat Culture to come in just so that we could mess around with the mics and try them out on different material. It was never intended to be a real session and they jammed a few songs and new ideas for our benefit to try out the new ribbon mics. We set them up in the studio in separate rooms so that they could see each other through the glass and they laid down the ideas live. Graham's guitar and vocal were recorded together with a pair of GA R1s while Emily sang along in the other room again into a GA R1. The mics were all recorded flat with a bit of compression to tape and they put down three or four different songs while we experimented with gain and mic position and generally just getting a feel for the mics.
I came across the files a few days ago and decided to have a mess just for fun and added a bit of keyboard and generally chopped it around a bit which gave me an idea.....................................

So here's the deal. Download the original tracks below and get into being a bit creative with your own ideas. You can do absolutely anything you want, so get jiggly and lets hear some radical creative treatments. Add some drums/guitar/tibetan nose flute, anything you fancy to show us what you can do. Send us your mix and we will stick them all up on line on this page and the best one will get a GA R1 ribbon for free, zip, rien, nowt, nothing.

Come on what have you got to lose except your dignity?
