We've
said this a thousand times but what everyone needs in their
studio is a few different types of
mic so if one isn't inspiring you then you can reach for another.
Colossal multi-platinum albums have had vocals recorded with
lowly Shure SM57s and SM58s so lets get real and put the mic
into perspective. .............................. It's
important but it's only PART of the story..
We
are going to run the first of a series of HOW TO RECORD VOCALS
days at the studio on Saturday April 3rd and we have limited
this first session to just 4 places for obvious reasons. This
will be all about hands on, Choosing and setting up
different mics and getting proper levels. Headphone mixes to
get a great performance. How to use compression going to tape
and coming off...... EQ - when to use it and how.....Balancing
the vocal with the back track......Which effects you should
use and which you shouldn't......
We've
got two singers booked for the day, a male and female (that's
a boy and a girl) and everyone will be involved directly in
recording their performances onto the RADAR multitrack and then
mixing the track. Below are just some of the great selection
of mics to choose from we have at the studio ...................
Neumann U87
Neumann U47fet
AKG 414
AEA R84 Ribbon
Se Gemini Valve
Neumann TLM 103
ADK area 51 TT valve
Advanced Audio CM47 valve
GA R1 active Ribbon
.........as well as a load of other ribbon and dynamics.
Even
if you
are even just thinking about buying a new vocal mic then you
can save yourself a fortune by coming along and listening to
what's out there.
Obviously
we only have a day but you'll get as much time as we can give to trying out all
the different mics/preamps and compressors and you can ask as many questions as
you want. And remember the workshop is being taken by our own John Spence who
has worked in pro studios now for over 25 years recording albums for the likes
of the Happy Mondays, Beautiful South and Bill Nelson........................
HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT
Fairview
is situated between the beautiful historic town of Beverley,
famous for its Minster and medieval market and the not so beautiful
city of Hull, famous for its fish and cheap heroin. It's about
in the middle of the country but if you want to come and get
a good start then it's worth coming up on the friday night and
staying at a cheap B and B. We have parking at the studio and
an endless supply of tea/coffee and jammy dodgers plus we are
just across the road from a McDonalds and a Waitrose so you
won't starve.
Price is £175. Email us if you are interested .. john@recording-microphones.co.uk
